Microsoft's newest update for Windows 10 was set to release Monday April 30th for manual download. The update, now titled the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, had an original planned release date earlier in April under the name "Windows 10 Spring Creators Update" — but due to an unforeseen bug, the release was delayed. The update was pushed to all Windows 10 computers on May 8th.
New Features in the April 2018 Update
Timeline is the headline feature — a new view that remembers your previously used applications and documents, presenting them in a scrollable timeline so you can pick up where you left off. Timeline also syncs across devices, including via Microsoft Edge on mobile, so activity on your PC shows up on your phone and vice versa.
Focus Assist (previously called Quiet Hours) received significant improvements. You can now configure automatic rules to suppress notifications during specific hours, during presentations, or when duplicating your display — helping reduce distractions without manual toggling.
Dictation is now built directly into Windows 10. Press Windows + H anywhere you can type text to activate it. This is a system-wide feature that works across applications without needing Word or Cortana specifically.
Near Share allows Windows 10 devices to share files and links with nearby PCs over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi — similar to Apple's AirDrop feature on macOS and iOS.
A Note on Update Reliability
Coming off the back of the 1709 update which left many users with problematic experiences, hopes were high that delivery of the April 2018 Update would be improved. Microsoft spent additional weeks testing before the rollout, reflecting lessons learned from previous update problems.
